About Us
The Green Zone made its debut at the 1996 Spokane Interstate Fair. Fair visitors had the opportunity then to walk through the interactive, interdisciplinary exhibit created by a coalition of private businesses, public agencies, and individuals, all dedicated to the promotion of environmental sustainability. In 1997, the Green Zone Board of Directors decided to create a permanent Green Zone exhibit in conjunction with the Spokane County Conservation District and WSU/Spokane County Cooperative Extension. Many sponsors and donors covered initial goods and services costs (as noted on the welcome sign.) The Green Zone campus includes outdoor demonstration sites and indoor displays. Information points throughout the site interpret demonstrations of environmentally sustainable practices. A Green Zone Indoor Resource Center is housed in the WSU/Spokane County Extension Education Center along with the Master Gardener Clinic. Green Zone exhibits are maintained by the Board of Directors and Members of the Green Zone Committee and many other volunteers like Master Gardeners and Master Composters. Exhibits continue to change and grow, often funded by local grants, and special events and workshops are periodically co-sponsored with Spokane County Conservation District and WSU/Spokane County Extension.
